A menu is a list of choices. It is generally presented as a drop-down or pop-up list. Most menus can be opened without the use of the mouse, using keyboard shortcuts. Here are two of the most useful:
NOTE: To select an item on the menu once it is open, simply press the letter underlined in the item name. For example: once the File menu is open, pressing the letter "c" for Close will close the current file or window.

Menus cannot be opened using keyboard shortcuts. To open a menu in the Mac environment, click on the menu name using the mouse.

To print the entire image currently displayed on your monitor screen, simply press the Print Screen key located in the top right area of the keyboard (labeled "extra keys" in the illustration). NOTE: Pressing Print Screen places the image on the Clipboard (an area of memory used for temporary storage). This procedure does not actually send the image to the printer. VIEWING: To view the image, you can open the Clipboard Viewer by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking Clipboard Viewer. PRINTING: To print the image you must first paste it into a file using an appropriate application, such as a word processing or graphics program. Once the image has been pasted, a hardcopy can be printed using the print command from within the application.

It also saves the image as a SimpleText file (SimpleText file format) on the hard disk with the name "Picture 1." VIEWING: To view the contents of the Clipboard, open the Edit menu and select Show Clipboard. To view the image as a file, open it by double-clicking the file name as listed on the hard disk. PRINTING: To print the image, open the file from the hard disk and choose the Print command from the File menu. TIP: The desktop can also be printed by selecting Print Desktop... from the File menu. This prints only the desktop when the Finder application is active.

Occasionally your computer may "freeze up" and no longer respond to mouse clicks or keyboard commands. To get out of this situation, follow these steps...
This operation is referred to as Ctrl/Alt+Del. It will open the Close Program dialog box and allow you to gracefully close the program that is hanging up the system. Click the End Task button or press the Enter key on the keyboard to close the program highlighted in the list. Any unsaved work will be lost.

To reboot your computer using the keyboard, perform a Ctrl/Alt+Del operation (see Freezes) to open the Close Program dialog box. With the Close Program dialog box open, perform the Ctrl/Alt+Del function one more time. This will force the operating system to reload and any unsaved work will be lost. This procedure is referred to as a warm boot, implying that the machine is already running and warm; as opposed to a cold boot, the computer being off and cold. NOTE: You can also reboot your computer by opening the Start Menu and selecting Shut Down. From the Shut Down dialog box select Restart. If the above methods fail press the restart button on the front of the machine. TIP: Always try to warm boot the system whenever possible (as opposed to a cold boot). A warm boot is easier on the electronics than turning the computer off and then back on again.
